23rd March, 2009. In-studio guest: Jag

So, spring break is over. So to give me company and help me get over my depression, was Jag (Jagadeeswaran Jayaprakash), the President of 'Aarohi' and a Masters student at the Dept. of Music Technology at Georgia Tech. Aarohi is a student organization made to promote Indian classical music and art forms.

Jag was in the studio tonight to talk about Aarohi and
South Indian Classical music, called Carnatic (or Karnatak) music. Jag played Carnatic music through the hour, and it was great. This show has traditionally concentrated on North Indian Classical, or Hindustani music, so it was great for the diversity of the music that we play here. Here's what played tonight:

1. Varanam - Viriboni (Ragam: Bhairavi / Thalam: Khanda jaadhi ata thalam)
2. Janani Ninnu Vina (Ragam: Reethigowlai / Thalam: Misra Chapu)
3. Rama nee samanam evaro (Ragam: Kharaharapriya / Thalam: Roopakam)

So here are a couple of things you should know about Aarohi:

Firstly, their website is:
http://cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/aarohi/default/index.html

Visit it to find out more about membership, how you can get involved, and what are the kinds of events they organize.

Secondly, they have a show coming up in just a couple of weeks! It is going to be a students' concert - Srinath, a masters student in CS would be giving a vocal performance, followed by a Violin concert by Gokul, a PhD student in the ECE.

For further details,
Mail : aarohi@gatech.edu
Or call Jag at : 404 423 1974

Thanks for tuning in, and thanks Jag for coming in! See you all next Monday.

Karan
