Pandit Bhimsen Joshi

Sorry, I've been falling behind on my blog posts the last couple of weeks. Hopefully, I can keep things updated on time from now on.

For a long time now, I've been meaning to do a special episode featuring the great vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi - two reasons for this - firstly, I'm a huge fan of his music, it is absolutely fantastic! And secondly, I happen to have at my disposal a very decent collection of his music.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is one of India's greatest classical vocalists. He is a member of the Kirana Gharana. Though He is best known as a classical vocalist, he is famous for his devotional music, and he has done a bit of playback singing as well. His compositions are said to incorporate styles from several different gharanas, and he is said to be an amazingly spontaneous performer.

How he came to be where he is is another story in itself. He ran away from his home in North Karnataka when he was about eleven years old, and hopped onto a train to Dharwad. From there, he borrowed money from some of the passengers on the train and made his way to Pune and then Gwalior where he joined the Madhava School of Music. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi then went on to release his debut album and moved to Mumbai to work at All India Radio. And of course is rest is pretty much history...
